A Real Wedding
Sarah & Liam
Sarah and Liam got engaged at Midhope Castle. So when it came to getting married, the shortlist had one name on it.
Their first message didn’t leave much room for interpretation:
“To say that we are Outlander obsessed would be an understatement. We got engaged at Midhope and would love to have a legal handfasting there too, and make it as Outlander themed as possible. Both Liam and I have Scottish ancestry, and would love to connect with our ancestors with a celtic ceremony.”
We like a clear brief. This one was about as clear as they come.
Getting married at Lallybroch
If you’ve watched Outlander you know Midhope. It’s the 16th-century tower house that plays Lallybroch, the Fraser family home, sitting quietly on the Hopetoun estate a short drive from Edinburgh. If you haven’t watched Outlander, it’s a properly old Scottish castle with a walled courtyard and an archway that looks built for wedding photos. Either way, it works.
It’s also on a private estate, so you can’t just turn up with a celebrant and a ring. It needs booking, and the legal paperwork has to line up with it. That’s the side of things we sort out, so Sarah and Liam could spend their energy on the outfits. And they did.
Tartan, a tiara and a fur-trimmed hood
Sarah wore a teal tartan gown with a tiara, and later a fur-trimmed hooded cloak that Claire herself would have been happy to borrow. Liam went for tweed. A handful of their family stood in the courtyard, and their celebrant married them legally right under the arch, with a ceremony that leaned into the Celtic roots they’d both asked for. Rings, vows, a kiss, and a lot of very happy family in the background.
“They got engaged at Lallybroch. Then they came back and got married there. That’s commitment to the bit.”
After that we took the two of them round the estate. Up the castle steps, back out through the arch, then into the woods along the burn for some quiet ones away from everybody. We finished inside, by one of the old castle windows, with the light coming in sideways like a scene from the show.
