Is Eloping Right for You?
Let’s find out together.
A handful of honest questions about your day — the guests, the legal bit, and what feels like you.
Should you elope?
Eloping isn’t one thing. It can be just the two of you on a quiet hillside, a handful of favourite people, or a tiny gathering of twenty or thirty — with a legal ceremony here in Scotland or a symbolic one and the paperwork done at home. Answer a few questions and we’ll show you the shape of elopement that fits you, and what it would take. (Wondering where? That’s what our Location Matcher is for.)

Common questions
Do you need witnesses to elope in Scotland?
Yes — Scotland legally requires two witnesses, aged 16 or over, on the day. If it’s just the two of you, don’t worry: we’re very happy to act as your witnesses.
Can we get legally married in Scotland, or do we marry at home first?
Either works. You can have a fully legal ceremony here — with a registrar or a Humanist Society Scotland celebrant, as humanist weddings are legally binding in Scotland — or keep your Scotland ceremony symbolic (handfasting, quaich, personal vows) and do the legal paperwork back home. We’ll help you decide what’s simplest for you.
How far in advance do we need to sort the legal paperwork?
For a legal marriage in Scotland you each submit a marriage notice (form M10) — up to three months before the wedding and no later than 29 days before. We’d recommend allowing at least three months, and more if a visa is involved. Our Timeline Planner lays out the dates.
Do we need a visa to get married in Scotland?
If you’re travelling from outside the UK to marry here, you may need a UK Marriage Visitor visa — you can’t marry on a standard visitor visa — and from 2026 even visa-free visitors need a UK ETA to enter. Couples with EU Settlement Scheme status are exempt. It varies by nationality, so check the current rules on gov.uk or just ask us.
Can we have guests at our elopement?
Absolutely — anywhere from just the two of you up to a small gathering of around twenty or thirty. It stays intimate and relaxed, just with the people who matter most beside you.
What if we want everyone there?
Then a true elopement may not be your best fit — and that’s fine. A destination wedding in Scotland, at a castle like Eilean Donan or Oxenfoord, gives you the magic of Scotland with your whole crowd there to celebrate. Tell us what you’re imagining and we’ll help.
Is eloping right for you?
Eloping isn’t about cutting corners — it’s about a wedding day that’s genuinely yours. But it isn’t for everyone, and that’s worth being honest about before you plan anything. The quiz above gives you a steer in two minutes; here’s the fuller picture of what eloping in Scotland actually involves.
Can it just be the two of you? (And can you have guests?)
Yes to both. An elopement can be purely the two of you, or a small handful of your favourite people, right up to a tiny gathering of around twenty or thirty. If you find you want more than that — a proper guest list and a big celebration — eloping probably isn’t the right fit, and a destination wedding in Scotland at a castle like Eilean Donan or Oxenfoord may suit you far better. Either way, talk to us and we’ll point you the right way.
The legal bit, and witnesses
Scotland gives you two routes: a legal ceremony here (a registrar or a Humanist Society Scotland celebrant — humanist weddings are fully legal in Scotland), or a symbolic ceremony here with the legal paperwork done at home. Either way you’ll each submit a marriage notice (form M10) up to three months ahead and no later than 29 days before the day, and Scotland requires two witnesses aged 16 or over. If it’s just the two of you, we’re happy to be your witnesses. Our Timeline Planner maps out exactly when to do what.
Coming from overseas?
If you’re travelling from outside the UK to marry here, you may need a UK Marriage Visitor visa (you can’t marry on a standard visitor visa), and from 2026 even visa-free visitors need a UK ETA to enter. Give yourselves at least three months for the legal paperwork — more if a visa is involved. We help couples from all over the world do exactly this, so don’t let the admin put you off.
