A Real Elopement
Hannah & Carl
Hannah and Carl are the kind of Outlander fans who know their Lallybroch from their Leoch. So when they decided to renew their vows, there was only ever going to be one place.
They came up from England, which is a little unusual for us, most of our couples cross an ocean to get here. But the pull was the same one that brings couples from all over the world: a castle in West Lothian that the rest of the planet knows as Lallybroch, the Fraser family home from the show. To Hannah and Carl, renewing their vows there wasn’t a gimmick. It was the whole point.
The day started at The Witchery, all gothic glamour and dramatic lighting, where they got ready before we drove them out to Midhope Castle itself. And for once, Scotland turned on the charm: proper sunshine, the kind that makes the old sandstone glow.
Two superfans, all the right filming locations
This is where knowing the place properly earns its keep. We didn’t just shoot them in front of the castle. We took them to the corners of Midhope that fans will recognise frame for frame, the spots where the show actually filmed, the angles you only know if you’ve stood there before.
Then back into Edinburgh, to Bakehouse Close, the close that stands in for Jamie’s print shop on Carfax. Standing where a scene they’ve watched a dozen times was filmed, dressed up and freshly re-vowed. For a couple who love the story this much, that’s not a photo opportunity. It’s a moment they’ll feel every time they rewatch.
“Anyone can point you at the castle. Knowing the exact spots the show filmed, and how to get you there on the right light, comes from actually living here.”
From the Witchery to Midhope to a hidden Old Town close, it was a day built entirely around what they love, mapped out by people who know both the locations and the show. Two of us, all day, driving them between every spot so all they had to do was enjoy saying their vows all over again.
Dreaming of your own Lallybroch moment? Here’s everything about eloping at Midhope Castle.
