Bryony and Drew’s Surprise Glencoe Elopement

Bryony and Drew's surprise summer elopement at Buachaille Etive Mor, Glencoe

A Real Elopement

Bryony & Drew

The elopement nobody knew about, Glencoe · Summer

Where Buachaille Etive Mòr, Glencoe
When Summer
Came From England
Forecast Low cloud, dry

Bryony and Drew came up from England, got married at the foot of the Buachaille and went home again. Nobody knew. Not family, not friends, not the group chat.

This one didn’t start with an enquiry form. They’d loved Glencoe for years. They’d walked it, camped near it, stared at it from the A82 more times than they could count. When they decided to get married, there was never a shortlist. It was always going to be the glen.

The only question was who to tell. Their answer was nobody. Just the two of them, a piper, a celebrant and us. Everyone else found out afterwards, which is a lot more fun than you’d think.

Vows at the foot of the Buachaille

We married them in the heather below Buachaille Etive Mòr, the big pyramid of a mountain that guards the top of the glen. Cloud sat on the summit all day and never once lifted, which is exactly how you want it. A piper walked them in across the moor. Their celebrant handfasted them, they read vows they’d written on scraps of paper, and then they jumped a broom together, an old Scottish tradition that works a lot better in a satin dress than it has any right to.

Then the quaich. Bryony poured, they both pulled a face, and that was them married.

Summer in the glen isn’t what we’d pick. The midges see to that, and we tell every couple the same. But Drew’s in the army, and the army doesn’t plan around midges. That was the window, so that was the date. You pick your spots, you keep moving and you let the mountains do the rest.

Black Rock Cottage, the Three Sisters and a very quiet river

After the ceremony we did what we always do in Glencoe, which is drive, stop, walk, repeat. Black Rock Cottage with the Buachaille behind it. Up onto the rocks above the Three Sisters, where the cloud rolled through so thick they vanished for a minute. Down into Glen Etive to sit on an old stone bridge with the river running under them and nobody else for miles. Then back along the glen floor as the light softened, and out onto Rannoch Moor to finish by a lochan with the whole moor spread out behind them.

“They didn’t tell a soul. They just headed north, married each other in the mountains they’d always loved and went home with the best secret in England.”

That’s the thing about an elopement like this. There’s no schedule to keep, no guests to herd, no speeches to sit through. You get to be in the place you love with the person you love, and we get to follow you round it. For Bryony and Drew, that was the whole day. Clouds, heather, a piper, a broom and a river. Nobody else needed to be there.
