Surprise Proposal Photography · Edinburgh
Edinburgh Proposal Photographer
Ask the question. We’ll catch every second of it.
Two of us, hidden in plain sight, so you get the moment and their face when it lands. Then a relaxed session to celebrate.
You get one shot at this
So do we, and that’s exactly why there are two of us.
You’ve picked the ring. You’ve maybe rehearsed the words a hundred times in your head. The last thing you want is to trust the most nerve-wracking sixty seconds of your life to a photographer hiding behind one bush with one camera pointed one way.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you: the magic isn’t only in the moment you drop to one knee. It’s in their face when they realise what’s happening. One photographer physically cannot be on both at once. Two of us can. One catches you asking; the other catches them reacting. You get the whole story, both sides of it, forever.
We’ve been photographing Edinburgh proposals for years. We know how to disappear into a crowd, how to read the timing, and how to stay invisible right up until the second you want us to step in.
How a surprise proposal works with us
It’s more planned than it looks. That’s the trick.
01
You tell us the plan
Where, roughly when, and anything we should know. If you don’t have a spot yet, we’ll suggest the best ones for light, privacy and that jaw-dropping Edinburgh backdrop.
02
We scout and time it
We know these locations at every hour. We’ll pick the moment the light is best and the crowds are thinnest, and give you a simple signal to watch for so you know exactly when we’re ready.
03
We hide in plain sight
Our trick: we don’t lurk. We look like two tourists taking photos of the Castle, or like Matt’s just giving Jodie a photography lesson. Nobody, including the person about to be proposed to, has any idea we’re there for you.
04
You ask. We catch everything
The question, the face, the yes, the hug, the happy tears, the phone call to their mum. Both angles, both of you.
05
Then we celebrate
The nerves melt, and we roll straight into a relaxed couple session, so you’ve got lovely photos of your first hour engaged, not just the proposal itself.
Why two photographers
Because you cannot photograph two faces from one position.
Most proposal photographers work alone. They point the camera at you, and hope to swing round fast enough to catch the reaction. Sometimes they do. Often they miss it, and the reaction is the bit you’ll watch back forever.
With both of us there, nothing is left to chance. One lens is locked on the question. The other is locked on the answer. It’s the single biggest reason to book us over a solo shooter, and it’s simply how we work, every time.
The packages
All Edinburgh-based. Always both of us. Every image hand-edited and delivered in a private gallery to download in full.
The Yes
£650
The proposal itself, captured from two angles, plus around 20 minutes together afterwards to celebrate. That’s it: the moment, and a little breathing space to enjoy it.
The Celebration
£950
The proposal, then a proper hour and a half together across the city as a newly engaged couple, the same session our couples book in its own right.
The Toast
£1,750
The full celebration. The proposal, an extended session across the city, and then champagne or cocktails somewhere lovely to toast the yes properly, with us still shooting as you do. The one you’ll be glad you chose when you’re showing it off for years.

“They put us both at ease, especially me, and captured the moment perfectly. The photos that came out were fantastic. To quote my partner: ‘these are the only photos I’ve seen of myself I actually like’. They captured a special moment in our lives, with photos we’ll treasure for a lifetime.”
Favourite Edinburgh proposal spots
Where we love to capture the question.
Calton Hill
Castle, monuments and the whole skyline in one frame. The classic for a reason, and stunning at golden hour.
The Vennel Steps
That postcard view of the Castle framed between old stone walls. Compact, romantic, and made for a proposal.
Princes Street Gardens
Green, central and easy, with the Castle rising up behind you. Simple to reach and gorgeous.
Dean Village
One of the prettiest corners in the city. It draws crowds now, so we time it right for a clean, quiet frame. Cinematic and unmistakably Edinburgh.
Circus Lane
The prettiest little cobbled mews in the city. Intimate and utterly charming.
The Royal Botanic Garden
For a calmer, greener moment away from the crowds. It needs a photography permit, which we’ll help you sort. Not sure which spot? Tell us the feeling you’re after and we’ll match you to it.
Let’s plan your proposal
Tell us the plan, or tell us you need help making one. Fill in the form, or message us on WhatsApp or email so nobody overhears. We’ll keep your secret.
Good to know
How do you stay hidden?
We blend in as tourists, or pose as a photographer and student out on a lesson. We keep our distance with long lenses and only step in once you’ve asked. Your partner won’t clock us. They never do.
What if I’m nervous about the timing?
That’s normal, and it’s our job to make it easy. We agree a simple signal beforehand so you’re never guessing whether we’re ready. You just walk them to the spot and be yourself.
Do you help plan the proposal?
As much or as little as you like. Location ideas, best time of day, how to get them there. We’ve done this a lot, and we’re happy to help you make it perfect.
What about the weather?
It’s Edinburgh. We always have a covered backup nearby and we’ll keep an eye on the forecast with you. Moody skies make beautiful photos anyway.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can. Good dates and golden-hour slots go first, especially in spring and autumn. But do ask even at short notice, we’ll always try.
Do you travel outside Edinburgh?
These are Edinburgh-based so we can stay close, scout properly and get the timing perfect. Dreaming of a Highland proposal or a full elopement? Just ask. That’s a different conversation, and one we love having.
Hey, we’re Jodie & Matt
We met in the Office. We are basically Jim and Pam, except we moved to the Scottish Highlands and started photographing elopements. (Sorry, Roy.)
Parents to 3 kids, 2.5 dogs (we can explain) and 1 cat called Poppy. We love The Office, Outlander (obvs), and we are STILL annoyed about the ending of Game of Thrones. Matt is Harry Potter obsessed.
We’ve been doing this for over a decade. On a proposal day we’re your witnesses, your lookouts and your raincoat holders. We take it seriously. We also take the piss a bit. The two are not mutually exclusive.
The ring is bought. The words are ready.
Don’t leave the memory of it to one camera and a bit of luck.
Two of us. The moment, and the reaction. Out of sight until you need us.
You get one shot. Let’s not miss a second of it.
