The Best Accommodation for Your Glencoe Elopement

The Best Accommodation for Your Glencoe Elopement

Glencoe is where most of our elopements happen. After photographing hundreds of couples here, we know the area inside out — including where to stay. Here’s our honest guide to finding the right accommodation for your elopement.

Choosing where to stay for your Glencoe elopement matters more than you might think. It sets the tone for your entire trip, affects your morning routine, determines how far you’re driving on the day, and — if you pick well — gives you somewhere genuinely special to come back to after one of the best days of your life.

We’ve seen couples stay in everything from luxury lodges to basic Airbnbs in Glencoe and the surrounding areas. Here’s what we’ve learned about what actually works.

Stay Close to Your Ceremony Location

This sounds obvious, but we see couples get it wrong regularly. They fall in love with a gorgeous cottage in Oban or Fort William, not realising it’s 45 minutes to an hour from where they actually want to get married. That’s fine for a holiday. It’s not ideal when you’re trying to maximise daylight on your elopement day.

For most Glencoe elopements, you want to be staying within the glen itself or within a 20-minute drive. That means the villages of Glencoe, Ballachulish, Kinlochleven, or the area around the Clachaig Inn.

With us: We’ll advise on the best base for your specific ceremony location once we’ve planned your day together. We know which spots are closest to which locations and can save you a lot of wasted Google Maps time.

Kinlochleven: Our Left Field Recommendation

If we had to pick one base for a Glencoe elopement, it would be Kinlochleven. It’s a small village tucked at the head of Loch Leven, about 15 minutes from the heart of Glencoe. It’s quieter than Glencoe village itself, has a surprisingly good range of accommodation, and the drive in and out is stunning.

It’s also where we lived for years, so we know it well. There are a few pubs with restaurants. There’s a wee takeaway coffee place and a convenience store. And you’re surrounded by mountains on all sides.

For accommodation specifically, look for self-catering lodges and cottages on Airbnb or Booking.com. Kinlochleven has several that are perfect for couples — hot tubs, mountain views, that kind of thing. Prices are generally more reasonable than Glencoe village too.

Glencoe Village and Ballachulish

Glencoe village is the obvious choice and there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s right in the glen (shock), there are a handful of B&Bs and holiday lets, and you’re minutes from the main elopement locations.

The downside is availability. Glencoe village is small — genuinely small — and the good places book up fast, especially in autumn when elopement season overlaps with peak leaf-peeping season. If you’re planning an autumn elopement, book accommodation as early as you book us.

Ballachulish is just next door and has a few more options, including the Ballachulish Hotel which has loch views and a decent restaurant. It’s a solid fallback if Glencoe village is booked up.

The Clachaig Inn

The Clachaig deserves its own section because it’s a Glencoe institution. It’s a proper Highland inn with rooms, a bar with over 300 whiskies, live music some evenings, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into exactly the Scotland you imagined.

It’s not luxury in the boutique hotel sense. The rooms are comfortable but straightforward. What you’re paying for is the location (deep in the glen, surrounded by mountains) and the atmosphere. If your idea of the perfect post-elopement evening is whisky by a fire in a proper Scottish pub, the Clachaig is hard to beat.

Luxury Options

If you want something more upmarket, look slightly further afield. The Highlands have some genuinely beautiful luxury lodges and boutique hotels within 30-45 minutes of Glencoe.

Self-catering lodges with hot tubs are popular with our couples. There are several around Loch Leven, Loch Linnhe, and the Fort William area that offer the “private Highland retreat” experience. Think floor-to-ceiling windows looking at mountains, a hot tub on the deck, a good kitchen for cooking or ordering in.

For hotels, Glencoe House is a boutique option right in the glen. It’s small, stylish, and well-positioned. Worth looking at if you prefer being looked after rather than self-catering.

What About Fort William?

Fort William is the nearest proper town, about 30 minutes from central Glencoe. It has supermarkets, restaurants, outdoor shops, and significantly more accommodation options.

We wouldn’t recommend it as your base for the elopement day itself — the drive adds up and the town itself isn’t particularly atmospheric. But it’s a good option for the nights before or after your elopement if you want easier access to shops and restaurants for the non-wedding parts of your trip.

Practical Tips From Experience

Book early. Seriously. The best places in and around Glencoe book months in advance, especially for September, October, and the Christmas period. If you’ve booked your elopement date, book accommodation immediately.

Two nights minimum. You don’t want to be checking in on your elopement day. Arrive the night before, settle in, get your bearings. And you’ll want the morning after to decompress, look at your photos, and not immediately jump in a car.

Check the getting-ready space. You’ll be getting ready at your accommodation on the morning of the elopement. Good natural light, a decent mirror, enough space to spread out — these things matter. A cramped, dark room makes the getting-ready photos harder and the experience less enjoyable.

Hot tubs are worth it. After a day of walking around the Scottish Highlands in October, sinking into a hot tub with a glass of champagne and your new spouse is pretty much perfection.

Don’t book a remote cottage without mobile signal. Your photographer, celebrant, and anyone else involved in the day needs to be able to reach you on the morning of the elopement. We’ve had a couple of close calls with couples in beautiful but completely off-grid cottages.

What About the Rest of Your Scotland Trip?

Most of our American couples spend 7-14 days in Scotland, with the elopement somewhere in the middle. That means you’ll probably want accommodation in other places too — Edinburgh for a couple of nights either side of your trip is the most common pattern.

We’ve written about Edinburgh accommodation separately, and our complete planning guide covers the broader trip logistics. For budgeting purposes, expect to spend £100-250 per night for a good self-catering option in the Glencoe area, depending on the season and how luxurious you want to go.
