What dress should I wear for an elopement?

January 20, 2022

With so many dresses out there finding the right dress for your elopement to the the Scottish highlands can be a minefield.

The images on this page come from 4 of our recent Highlands Wedding Elopements… they are 4 very different dresses – none of them are right, none are wrong – all look amazing.

If you are planning on marrying outdoors, you will need to be prepared for the weather. Scotland has a very unique and unpredictable weather system. You can have sun, rain, snow and wind all within an hour of each other. But that makes it all the more rewarding. The weather can change the landscape and, in all fairness it looks amazing in pretty much all conditions. With that in mind, if you’re planning on coming in from a warmer climate, it might be an idea to bring along a jacket, or to complete the Scottishness, why not use a tartan shawl as a wrap!

Thermal underwear and base layers, whilst not the most common form of wedding undergarments, can help to keep you a little warmer, especially if you’re planning a winter wedding.

You can use the weather to your advantage though. A Soft, long flowing skirt would look absolutely amazing in the wind! But bear in mind that you may have a little walk ahead of you and so, a heavy and long dress may not be too comfortable! But like with the “choos”, it could always be carried to the location as it could look amazing against the dramatic landscapes!

It’s also an idea to wear, or at least bring along, waterproof footwear. Heels aren’t the greatest idea as the terrain is likely to be muddy or rocky, so you wouldn’t want to slip and hurt yourself, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take along the “choos” too and just change into them when it’s safe suitable to! Saying that, wellies can look pretty awesome under a wedding dress!

Umbrellas aren’t always suitable due to the windy conditions but it’s still an idea to bring one along. It doesn’t need to be white either, a multicoloured one can add that pop of colour and fun look to your photos! Waterproof coats are also a good idea, especially as you can take them off during the ceremony and for the photos.

Please do bear in mind that what ever you do choose to wear, you will more than likely get it very dirty so if you are planning on having a celebratory party afterwards, you may need to have your outfit cleaned beforehand!

So that’s what I think you should consider when thinking of what to wear for your elopement in the Scottish highlands. As you can see from our portfolio, we’ve had a range of different dresses and they all looked pretty amazing against the stunning backdrop the highlands have to offer.

Thanks, as always, for reading.
