Yes, You Can Legally Marry in Scotland (From Anywhere)

No residency requirements. Unlike England (28 days) or Ireland (notification periods), Scotland lets you arrive and marry.

You’ll need to submit M10 forms 12 weeks before (we help with this). Pick up your marriage schedule 7 days before. Have your ceremony anywhere — mountaintop, beach, forest. It’s all legal.

For Americans: Your Scottish marriage certificate is recognized in all 50 states. No apostille needed. We’ve helped 150+ US couples navigate this.

Timeline: Apply 12 weeks out → Arrive 7 days early → Marry anywhere in Scotland → Legal worldwide

What Nobody Tells You About Scottish Weather

There’s no perfect season. But each has its character.

May-Sept
Warmer, longer days (but tourists & midges)
October
Autumn colors (unpredictable but spectacular)
Jan-Feb
Quiet, intimate, cheaper (and cozy pubs)

About those midges: Late August to late September is peak midge season. We don’t even work in Glencoe during July/August/early September because of tourist numbers and these tiny terrors.

The truth: We embrace it. Rain makes great photos. We always have Plan B (which is usually Plan A in the rain). Those soft, overcast skies? Absolutely stunning for photography.

Cairngorms National Park

Where We Work

Locations Across Scotland

The Cairngorms: Ancient Caledonian pine forests. Mountain plateaus. Lochs that mirror the sky. Britain’s largest national park.

We know the hidden corries, the secret beaches, the spots where mobile phones don’t work. Where you might spot red deer instead of tour groups.

Every location has backup options for weather. Every spot chosen for privacy and beauty. This is what ten years of experience looks like.

The Locations: What You Actually Need to Know

Not just pretty pictures. Actual logistics, access info, and when to avoid the crowds.

Glencoe

Glencoe The Highlands, done right

Best time: 6-9am before the tour buses arrive. September for purple heather, October for golden light.

Access: Most spots are roadside (perfect for less mobile guests). Hidden gems require 20-minute walks. Three Sisters viewpoint gets packed by 10am – we know better spots.

Weather backup: Kingshouse Hotel for indoor ceremony. The Clachaig Inn for cozy portraits.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh Urban elegance

Arthur’s Seat at sunrise — before the fitness crowd. Dean Village without the Instagram queue. The hidden gardens of the Old Town when the ghost tours have gone home.

Edinburgh proves elopements don’t always need mountains. Sometimes cobblestones and centuries-old architecture are perfect.

Scottish Borders

The Borders Scotland’s overlooked romance

Rolling hills that turn purple with heather. Abbeys that have stood for 800 years. Rivers winding through valleys untouched by time.

While everyone races north to Skye, you’ll have entire valleys to yourselves.

Perthshire

Perthshire The forest kingdom

Those autumn forests you’ve pinned? They’re here. Ancient woodlands that explode in gold and copper each October.

Plus that bridge from Outlander where Claire and Jamie made their blood vow. Perthshire is Scotland’s heart, beating quietly.

East Coast

The East Coast Castles, cliffs, and fishing villages

Dramatic castle ruins perched on cliff edges. Harbours where fishing boats paint the scene in primary colours.

The east coast offers a different Scotland — one that most visitors never discover. Your ceremony soundtrack? Waves and seabirds.

Location Planning, Simplified

We’ll help you narrow down your options.

After ten years of photographing across Scotland, we know which locations work in different weather conditions. We know the driving times, the walking distances, the best times to avoid other visitors.

We match locations to what you’re looking for. Mountain views? We know the spots. Castles? We’ve got options. Forests? Several to choose from.

We’ll send you a detailed location guide based on your preferences.

We nearly booked Skye like everyone else. So grateful they showed us the Borders instead. We had an entire valley to ourselves.

We’re Matt & Jodie

Based in the Scottish Highlands. Ten years helping couples navigate Scottish elopements.

We don’t just photograph — we’re your entire support system. Legal paperwork guidance. Vendor connections. Weather contingencies. Timeline planning. The friend who answers your 2am panic texts about Scottish marriage laws.

What we provide: Location scouting, timeline planning, vendor recommendations, legal guidance, weather backup plans, and yes, incredible photography too.

Full support packages from £5,000. But honestly, let’s just start with a chat about what you need.

The Stuff That Actually Matters

The Real Timeline:

Book us 18-24 months out (we’re already booking 2026). Submit your M10 forms and apply for your Marriage Visitor Visa 12 weeks before. Arrive in Scotland to collect your marriage schedule. Get married anywhere — mountaintop, beach, forest, it’s all legal.

Or keep it simple and opt for a symbolic (but no less special) ceremony — no paperwork, no waiting, just your vows wherever you want.

What It Actually Costs (besides our £5,000):

  • • Flights from US: £800-1,200 per person
  • • Accommodation: £150-350 per night
  • • Celebrant: £500-800 (humanist recommended)
  • • Hair & makeup: £150-300 (optional)
  • • Food: £50 per person per day if eating out

What We Actually Do For You:

Personal supplier lists based on your location and style. Full itinerary planning for your whole Scotland trip. Regular catch-ups via video calls and WhatsApp. Help with the legal paperwork (we’ve guided hundreds of US couples through this). Mood boards and posing ideas 4-6 weeks before. And someone who actually answers when you panic at 2am about whether you need an apostille (you don’t).

We’ll share all of this (and more) when we chat about your specific plans.
