Edinburgh Elopement

Lauren & Scott

by The Sassenachs

Lauren & Scott had, like many, a had a covid-impacted wedding. They actually ended up having to have their legal ceremony back home in a court house in Tennessee, USA.

But they really wanted a Scottish Elopement so they decided to travel to Edinburgh Scotland for a symbolic ceremony and photoshoot. Oh, and one thing that we absolutely LOVED – they had their ceremony after their shoot – what a fab way to end the day!

Edinburgh is the ultimate elopement city in Scotland. It is full of hidden closes and secluded spots and is beautiful in any weather. More on this later!

On the day of their ceremony, the weather gods really delivered. Dark, moody, brooding skies with a bit of rain thrown in for added atmosphere. Perfect! These guys braved the elements for 4 hours before heading off to The Witchery for a well earned dinner. If you’ve not been to The Witchery before we thoroughly recommend it – amazing food in jut the best atmosphere!

Are you looking for an Edinburgh Elopement Photographer? Then get in touch – we’d love to hear from you!
Scroll down for all the photos from their day! Oh – and if it looks like they had their ceremony last, it’s because they did! They chose to opt for a ceremony at the end of the day up on Calton Hill to make the most of the best light.

Eloping in Edinburgh

Eloping in Edinburgh
Edinburgh is a breathtaking destination for those looking to elope. With its historic architecture, charming cobbled streets, and stunning natural landscapes, Edinburgh offers a unique and romantic setting for your special day. Whether you’re local or coming from overseas, there are plenty of travel options to help you get to Edinburgh for your big day.

Distance from London and Glasgow
Edinburgh is situated in southeastern Scotland, approximately 215 miles (346 km) north of London and 60 miles (97 km) east of Glasgow. Both cities are easily accessible by air or rail, making Edinburgh a convenient destination for those coming from the UK or abroad for their wedding day.

Travelling to Edinburgh – Options for Overseas Visitors
For those coming from overseas, Edinburgh Airport is the most convenient option. The airport is just 7 miles (11 km) from the city centre and offers regular flights to destinations around the world. Once you arrive at the airport, you can take a taxi, bus, or train into the city.
For those traveling from London, the quickest way to get to Edinburgh is by train. The journey takes just over 4 hours on the high-speed Virgin Trains East Coast service, with several trains departing from London King’s Cross Station throughout the day.

5 Stunning Outdoor Elopement Locations in Edinburgh
As a photographer, I have had the pleasure of capturing traditional weddings, elopements and post-wedding photoshoots in many beautiful locations around Edinburgh. Here are 5 of my favorite outdoor locations for a romantic elopement.

Calton Hill
Calton Hill is a historic hill located in the heart of Edinburgh, offering stunning views of the city and beyond. With its monuments, observatory, and classical architecture, Calton Hill is a unique location for your elopement. The elopement ceremony seen above was done on Caslton Hill and made for a truly beautiful wedding ceremony.

Arthur’s Seat
Arthur’s Seat is the highest point in Edinburgh, offering panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. This extinct volcano is a peaceful and secluded spot, perfect for a private and intimate elopement ceremony. This is a challenging walk up the to the highest part of Edinburgh but the views are 100% worth it over towards Edinburgh castle and the rest of the city. It really would be an absolutely fantastic place to have your ceremony.

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a 70-acre oasis of beauty, located just a short walk from the city center. With its lush gardens, vibrant floral displays, and tranquil ponds, this is a truly romantic setting for your elopement. Like many attractions in Edinburgh, there will be a charge to marry in the gardens.

The Forth Bridges
The Forth Bridges, including the iconic Forth Rail Bridge, offer a stunning backdrop for your Edinburgh Elopement and make for unforgettable wedding photos. The towering structures provide a breathtaking backdrop for your ceremony, surrounded by the beauty of the Firth of Forth and the rolling hills of East Scotland. These bridges are approximately 10 miles out of the city centre and are easily reached.

Princes Street Gardens
Princes Street Gardens is a picturesque public park located in the heart of Edinburgh, offering views of Edinburgh Castle and the city skyline. With its lush greenery, serene ponds, and stunning floral displays, this is a truly romantic location for your elopement. Please note that you will need a permit to marry in Princes Street Gardens and they are unavailable during October to January due to the Christmas market.

Capturing the Charm of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile
No blog about Edinburgh Elopements would be complete without talking about the Royal Mile. Whistle not suitable for the elopement ceremony itself it is a “must include” element to your wedding day (or wedding night!)
Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is a the go to destination for anyone visiting the city, and it’s also the perfect location for a photoshoot. The Royal Mile is a bustling street that runs through the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, lined with historic buildings, quaint closes and vennels, and plenty of charming cobbled streets. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, there’s no better place to capture the essence of Edinburgh’s history and beauty than the Royal Mile.

The Royal Mile: A Window into Edinburgh’s History
The Royal Mile is one of Edinburgh’s most historic streets, stretching from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Along the way, you’ll find a wealth of historic buildings, including the historic St Giles’ Cathedral, the Canongate Kirk, and the Museum of Scotland. Each building has its own unique story to tell, and together they offer a window into Edinburgh’s rich history.

Closes and Vennels: Hidden Gems on the Royal Mile
The Royal Mile is more than just a street – it’s a maze of closes and vennels that run off the main thoroughfare. These narrow alleys are lined with colorful buildings, charming courtyards, and hidden gardens, offering a glimpse into Edinburgh’s hidden past. Whether you’re looking for a romantic spot for a photoshoot or just exploring the city, the closes and vennels of the Royal Mile are a must-see.

Outlander Filming Location on the Royal Mile
Fans of the popular Outlander series will be delighted to know that the Royal Mile was used as a filming location for the show. Bakehouse Close is the one which most fans look for, as this is the location for Jamie’s print shop in the series. Matt has looked an unhealthy amount of times but unfortunately Jamie isn’t there 🙁

Dining and Drinking in Edinburgh: A Guide for Eloping Couples
Edinburgh is a foodie’s paradise, offering a diverse range of dining and drinking experiences for eloping couples. From traditional Scottish pubs to sophisticated cocktail bars, Edinburgh has something to offer for every taste and budget. Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner or a night out on the town, Edinburgh has you covered.

Cocktail Bars in Edinburgh
For those looking for a more sophisticated dining and drinking experience, Edinburgh has a number of top-notch cocktail bars. The Bon Vivant is a stylish bar in the heart of the city, offering a menu of classic and creative cocktails, along with a range of Scottish whiskies and gins. Cask Smugglers is our favourite cocktail bar in the city and another popular place in town. Access this via the festival garden on top of the roof of Waverley Station. And for those who love a bit of whimsy, The Voodoo Rooms is a quirky bar that offers a range of imaginative cocktails and a lively atmosphere.

Traditional Scottish Pubs
For a more traditional experience, head to one of Edinburgh’s many traditional Scottish pubs. The Royal Oak is a historic pub that has been serving drinks for over 300 years. With its warm atmosphere and range of local ales and whiskies, the Royal Oak is the perfect spot for a cozy night out. The fabulously named Worlds End halfway down the Royal Mile is also a fab spot – featured in Outlander, the pub is named Worlds End as it was situated at the site of the City Walls and therefore was the “end of the world” for those who lived within the city limits.

Whisky Bars in Edinburgh
For whisky lovers, Edinburgh is home to a number of excellent whisky bars. The Whiski Rooms is a popular whisky bar, offering a range of single malts, blends, and other spirits. And for those who want to learn more about Scotland’s national drink, the Whisky Experience is a museum and bar that offers guided tastings and a wealth of information about whisky.

Deep Fried Mars Bars
For those looking for a truly Scottish culinary experience, you can’t go wrong with a deep-fried Mars bar. Well, in our opinion you can go very wrong as they are rank! However, this Scottish delicacy is exactly what it sounds like – a Mars Bar (chocolate covered caramel and nougat), deep-fried in batter (yep – honest). You can find deep-fried Mars bars at many chip shops and takeaway restaurants throughout Edinburgh.

So why choose an Edinburgh Elopement instead of a traditional wedding day?

One of the main reasons why someone would choose an elopement over a traditional wedding is cost.
A traditional wedding can be an expensive affair, with the average cost in Edinburgh being upwards of £20,000. An elopement, on the other hand, is typically much more affordable, as it involves fewer guests, a smaller venue, and less elaborate preparations. By eloping, couples can either save money or choose to use the savings to create a more memorable and intimate experience for themselves.

Another reason why eloping in Edinburgh is an attractive option is intimacy. Traditional weddings can be large and impersonal, with guests who are there mainly for the spectacle or to fulfill social obligations. An elopement, however, is a private and intimate event, which allows couples to focus on each other and their love for each other. This type of celebration can provide a more meaningful and emotional experience than a traditional wedding, and couples are able to truly enjoy the moment without the pressure of entertaining a large crowd.

Privacy is another factor that makes eloping in Edinburgh a desirable option. A traditional wedding is usually a public event, and the couple’s personal moments can be shared with a large audience. With an elopement, couples can have their special day just the way they want it, without the interference of outside distractions. This privacy can also be especially appealing for couples who want to keep their wedding a private affair.

Additionally, eloping in Edinburgh offers the opportunity for adventure and discovery. Edinburgh is a city full of history and cultural landmarks, and couples who elope here can make their special day a unique experience by exploring these wonders together. Whether they choose to visit Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Botanic Garden, or the Royal Mile, eloping in Edinburgh offers a sense of adventure and discovery that can make their wedding day an unforgettable one.
